Would you get an Asus EEE or Macbook AIR?

While the EEE is more economic in terms of price (one-seventh of Macbook AIR price), it is limited in functionality and size – but the Macbook Air looks like a portable Notebook for the fashion-victims to me. $1700 is a lot of money, even though the Dollar keeps on declining to the EURO (1,150€) I would rather not get a Macbook Air right now. The screen is powered by LEDs, so it is said. This new LED technology should reduce the battery drain and increase the usability. I am waiting for the first reports to come in, because this feature sounds really interesting… clear and crisp picture while having longer usage time? Also the keyboard has received an ambient-light (often called ambi-light). A neat feature, but worth that much? I am already cursing buying an ordinary Macbook (discounted student version for 950€), even though the battery times are great (6 hours), the performance is not that great in comparison to my old Sony VAIO which was 3 years old).
The EEE looks like a tool/toy for kids just by the looks of the promoting website – while the Macbook Air is sure to appear on managers’ desks in no time. I project Macbook Air sales to be massive… my quick 5 cent

I agree with what you said about the MB Air being a portable notebook for fashion victims (lately, portable Apple products tend to be like that, and that’s what I don’t like about it). I’d rather get an MB than an Air any day.

Nice article, but it would be great to have a comparison of the operating systems. AFAIK there is only one Version of Asus’s EEE available yet. It has a 4 GB solid state disk. Due to this it comes with a small linux version. I suppose it will be ok for surfing, reading mails and using messengers. Probable a good choice for people who do not use more features. An other disadvantage is the resolution. I got information in the web about people who built in new displays and 1.8†hdds to their EEE. That sounds really interesting. Otherwise I would wait until Asus puts out the next version of the EEE.

I think both machines are perfect for the blogger on the move, or for working on the train. The price of the asus is superb value for money, especially once you upgrade it yourself. The macbook air seems expensive in comparison, but its truly beautiful

Good article. The Macbook Air is an extremely nice concept. It is so thin that side on you cannot almost see it. There are several problems however. The first is that there is no CD drive, this would annoy even the most computer abled person. Secondly, the macbooks footprint is large. Yes it’s thin, but I’m sure most people would rather a slightly thicker laptop which took up less deskspace.

I saw the Asus EEE for the first time in the flesh at my local PC World. I have to say it is of amazing value for young persons just wishing to use Open Office at home for example to do their homework or blogging as someone else suggested. Great portable bare-bones laptop. As for the Macbook Air, well. The Macbook Air has really generated a lot of publicity. Apple once again is continuing to put pressure on Microsoft. The success of the iPod amongst young people may be key to the success of the future success of the Macbook Air. With Apple making a keen impression on these young users, the future of consumer electronics will definately include Apple and I can see the Air being a real hit once the initial price is lowered slightly. All in all both notebooks/laptops are ideal within their own contexts. The Asus EEE is perfect for the light user and the Macbook Air equally perfect for the heavier user.
