How to “jailbreak” your Ipod touch 2G:
Step 0: Get the official 3.0 firmware, without it will not work. You need to “restore” your Ipod touch 2G to the latest firmware.
You can either “buy” it on iTunes or “download” it (for free) from Apple’s website.
You would do so by going to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and using the second drop-down menu to “get the 3.0 firmware”. This will be downloaded from Apple’s website, not Felix’ (so no worries).
Step 1: Download redsn0w from any Dev-Team blog link or the link above (it is the 1-to-1 carbon copy of their file and has not been “funked with”). Dev-Team? Yes, the guys providing the redsn0w (http://blog.iphone-dev.org)
Step 2: Extract the files and put them into a folder on your desktop called redsnow (or whatever you like)
Step 3: Locate your IPSW file for 3.0. It should be located at
C:\Users\*USERNAME8\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates (or any download folder if you downloaded it).
Step 4: Copy this file into the redsnow folder on your desktop
Step 5: Put your iPod into DFU mode and connect it to iTunes. To enter DFU mode, turn your ipod off and then hold the lock and home button for 10 seconds, then let go of the lock button while holding the home button. iTunes should say your ipod is in DFU mode an needs to restore, just ignore it and move on to step 6
Step 6: Drag the IPSW onto redsn0w.exe
Step 7: Let it do its thing
Step 8: Enjoy, you are done. This takes under 2 minutes (max).
Note: if it ever freezes or shuts down. Just unplug, reset (hold both buttons), and try again.
(This nine step how-to was adapted from http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203161)
Good Luck!

@Mitchell: you may want to run a search for *.ipsw
if you downloaded it the file will be in your regular download folder, if you bought it, see above ;)

@0S, sorry to disappoint but I am by no means an expert in debugging, you may be better of posting a detailed error report in one of the dev-team forums, I am confident they will be able to sort you out mate

@George: I would say untethered version, because we are able to turn the ipod off or reboot it without having to reconnect it to your pc/mac to “re-activate” the jailbreak..
good luck!

My iPod Touch 2G runs the 2.2 firmware at the moment. Am I able to download the 3.0 ipsw, and then just put it straight into redsn0w.exe? Or do I need to upgrade it through iTunes first? Or do I need to actually buy it? Thankyou so much for this walkthrough, much appreciated! =D

@ZimbiXelite , you are probably running 2.2.1, right? I read on some blogsdna site that you should try the following:
- upgrade itunes to 8.2 (that way you can upgrade/restore to the latest os)
- run itunes
- attach your ipod (plug it in)
- click the “buy” notice, you will be taken to a site to confirm your purchase
- CANCEL (important) and you will be returned to the home page
- now you can “SHIFT” click the “restore” button and select the new firmware (3.0) you have downloaded using the links mentioned above (felix).
- this will “upgrade” your ipod
note: this sounds reasonable, but if you can, always go “clean” and do a clean install.

I can’t drag and drop it, nothing happens? This is the fifth time I’ve attempted a jail break, for gods sake. If QuickPwn could just stop messing about and deliver when they say they will..

Thankyou soo much, jez!
It worked great, but I was a bit scared after I’d upgraded to the non-modified OS 3.0 when iTunes said it couldn’t connect to my iPod. However, after a BSOD, rebooting my computer again fixed it. After that I just followed the steps in redsn0w – simple as! Is it not supposed to install Install.app? Anyways, I found it in Cydia.
Thanks again!

hi there im having problems using this jailbreaker
im using windows vista my ipod touch (2g) is already on 3.0 software and has been for months now and i have followed all the instructions multiple times now and still having the same trouble
basicly half way through the jailbreak process it seems to crash vista brings up a notification saying the redsnow application has stopped working and all im seeing each time on my ipod screen is ”downloading jailbreak data” i then have to restart my ipod to carry on using it at all or it keeps the message on screen
if anyone could help with this problem it would be much appreciated
many thanks in advance

hey razor,
thanks for asking your question here, it really means a lot to me to receive your comment, however I am unfortunately unable to offer you any solution to your problem with the jailbreak. It sounds a bit like an issue with the redsnow/jailbreaking tool you are using on windows. As I did test it with Mac OS X Leopard only I cannot really comment on any windows solutions.
However, you may want to try the following:
- right click on the file you use to launch the jb and select “execute/launch using admin rights”, this may help it (you will get a screen saying “do you really want to do this?” where you press “continue” (standard vista dialog with gray background faded out).
Best,
jez
