So how does this LHC (Large Hadron Collider) actually work?

There is loads of press coverage about the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) and more than enough information available on the internet, however I still did not understand how the LHC is working in general.
The below six minute video really helped me out in understanding the basics behind the LHC -
frankly I almost failed Physics, so be sure that this is not some geek stuff or information, but rather easy to grasp material well summarized.

Still one question remains unsolved - will earth be sucked in and or im/explode? (just kidding)
